On the day of the opening ceremony of the 30th Modern Olympic Games in London, Friday the 27th July 2012, the Club of Friends Of Mount Olympos and the Skiing and Climbing Club of Elassona, climbed the mythical “Mount of the Gods” in central Greece in a symbolic move, raising the flags of the United Kingdom, Greece and the Olympic Games on the highest peak, 2918 metres above sea level.
The athletes taking part in the initiative let a white pigeon free as they reached the top of the mountain, symbol of worldwide peace.
The symbolic journey to Mount Olympos finished with a wrestling contest, the winners of which were awarded olive wreaths, like in the ancient Greek Olympic Games.
